Text messages are the new lipstick on the collar.
However, in one case, a lawyer from Miami, Mitchell Karpf, used some text messages from a client's wife during a domestic dispute. The client wanted custody of the child, but the wife sai8d that he had left her and their child. The husband shot back that he had been physically abused by her, causing him to leave. When the wife denied his accusation, Karpf pulled out text messages from the wife apologizing for her abuse. Needless to say, Karpf won the case.
The use of text messages in a court is absolutely 100% cold hard evidence and can support a claim strongly. I believe text messaging is a good way to keep records, so that the court can be shown evidence that cannot be doubted.
